Summer Camp Ardèche, France
Expedition down river!
Hooray! Our 2 day canoe adventure has begun. Along the mighty Ardeche River we shall paddle our way 28 kilometres, through water water rapids and steep, stunning gorges, to complete The Grande Desente.
The day started with a bus trip to the take out point of the Mini Descente, where our boats were left for collection. Campers loaded their boats with essential camping gear, fastened their helmets, zipped their Buoyancy Vests, and paddled off with eager determination.
Using skills learned within canoe lessons and the Mini Descente, campers made quick and easy work of the challenges set before them, communicating effectively and maneuvering their way down stream.
Regular stops and swim breaks gave the arms a rest, including the mid morning break, where a canoe was dragged up steep stony beach. Here 6 to 8 campers were able to partake in a rock slide water entry - woohoo! The boat picked by speed as it raced toward the water, before capsizing and sending the squeals of glee under water.
Later in the day, a gourmet lunch was set against a stunning backdrop of towering cliffs, and wrestling matches and walking under water games were played. Great fun! Now refueled, campers were set to conquer rapids one after the other, safely monitored by our trusty River Team.
For the afternoon biscuit and chocolate treat, campers had to complete a group challenge of 'Building a Cairn' rock tower. Logic, leadership and teamwork came into play, and each camper rewarded with a welcome treat in order of highest rock tower.
We reached the bivouac site in good time, and everyone pitched in to get all gear to the site. Rock jumping or some relaxation were the activities of choice pre dinner, being a delicious barbecue and salad.
To earn dessert of marshmallows and the bonus prize of chocolate, campers were split into 4 teams, and set a challenge to build a stretcher with specific supplies, and carry one of the team through an obstacle course, whilst being tied together. Fantastic innovation and listening to make for very tough competition, well done!
Rounding up a very exciting day, campers slept under the stars, gearing up for the following day of paddling.
