Summer Camp Ardèche, France
Day trippin' - Splashworld and the Mall!
What an exciting day we have had here at VC Ardeche!
The campers stayed up late last night to watch the France vs. Germany game - and wow, what a game! The town of Salavas was alive with cheers and fireworks, and the campers had painted their faces with the tricoleur (at least those who supported France!). There were a few loyal German supporters in our little crowd, but they were certainly outnumbered in French soil. And even though the evening went late, all of the campers awoke bright eyed and bushy-tailed for a very exciting day - Splashworld!
Looking fresh in their starch-white VILLAGE CAMPS t-shirts, the campers piled onto the bus for an hour-and-a-half trip over to Monteux, where the first stop was the mall. Campers had two hours to shop their hearts out, stocking up on candy, chocolate, clothes, gifts, and gear for the upcoming grand descent. It was heartwarming to such great cooperation between campers - since we are such a small group (39 kids), everyone is becoming close with everyone else and we are beginning to feel like a real family. Friend groups are beginning to loosen up and unexpected friendships are happening everywhere!
After the mall we all got back into the van and headed over to Splashworld, the water amusement park in Monteux. We had 3 hours of crazy fun, with hydroslides, pools, bouncy castles, river floats, and more! Everyone got in and had an amazing time, racing each other on the slides and splashing about in the river floats. The weather was hot and muggy, so everyone was glad to be out of their clothes and into their swimwear. At about 4.30, everyone regathered (minus one group that were late, due to getting stuck in a hydroslide queue!) and made it back on the bus and back home.
When we arrived back we were greeted with delicious warm pizza made by the local Salavas pizziera. The campers had chosen their toppings yesterday morning, and so had been looking forward to them for two days! As expected, they were delicious!
We have just had a burst of rain, and the campers are inside playing musical instruments and pingpong. We have a keyboard, and I can hear Fur Elise playing through the window with a percussion backing of tambourines and bongo drums. A few keen souls are out on the courts playing basketball and swingball, while others are calling parents and checking their phones. The Blue group girls (15 and above) are even enjoying a special trip to town to have icecream for dessert! Several of the counsellors are having a night off tonight, including your humble correspondent Pebble the Photographer - and with that, will see you tomorrow!
