Summer Camp LTC, Leysin

21st July 2016

Exciting day!

David Allen opened the day with snippets of his professional life in South Africa and shared his experiences with all. His goal was to underline the importance of working in a team and to make everybody realize how valuable is life and do not take it for granted and waste it with misbehaviours and abuses. He then made an interactive game to reveal signs that a person lies, useful for an interview, as well as advices for gaining respect and confidence with any interlocutor. As a part of his stress management course and studies return advices he gives to colleges and MBA students, he gave hints for more efficient studying and a less stressful academic life. One of his main concerns were the mobile phones and the multimedia which are major sources of distractions, especially among adolescents. Part of his speech stressed the importance to recognize that we put our bodies and minds in a state of alertness when we have our smartphones with us, hence, the kids participated in a No Phone Day, so that they could enjoy real life relationships, rather than on a screen. David Allen closed his session by making the kids write down the things that fill and drain their tanks, what gives them security and what they most worry about. He encouraged them to do this mental activity every day, as a form of introspection and self-reflection.
This afternoon took place one of the most expected activities of all, staff included. The rafting location was at Chateaux d Oeux, towards Gstaad, in a very green and beautiful area. 8 boats composed by campers, counselors and experienced rafting guides, rafted down the river for more than an hour. It was a grade 2 to 3 level course, with many enjoyable rapids. It was a thrilling and athletic activity through a beautiful landscape, under excellent supervision of the rafting experts.
Although tired, the campers went down to the meeting room to enjoy the second presentation of the day. The guest speaker was Mr. Kerry Max Cook, who presented to us his devastating life story. This man had spent 22 years of his life on death row, in the Texas prison system, for a crime he did not commit. His presentation described many horrifying experiences he suffered through in prison, and yet he never gave up hope. Through education and determination, he was able to make a case for himself that went all the way to the supreme court, and justice was finally served. Now, he travels the world as a free man, educating kids on how to avoid the trials and tribulations he went through. He inspired LTC to stick to their dreams, and never give up hope. Afterwards, Mr. Cook happily took photos and answered any questions the kids had. It was evident how poignant his story was for them, because the kids asked many insightful, targeted questions.
