Summer Camp Zell am See, Austria

1st July 2012

First Zell Arrivals Day of 2012!

Today was the first day of camp for the first session of the 2012 Austria season. The councilors were out in full force to greet all of the campers as they arrived in the various modes of transportation from many different countries all over the world.

The campers began to come in early in the morning, with the first six campers arriving between nine and eleven in the morning. The pace picked up around lunch as more and more campers began to be dropped off by their parents and as the airport escorts began to come back.

Lunch was a free for all as campers and their parents were allowed to dine in the restaurant on some lovely salads prepared by the amazing kitchen staff that we have here at camp.

It was such a thrill to get to know the campers one by one as they arrived. The tennis instructor Ben did a great job keeping the early arrivals busy with sports as the other councilors helped escort the newest campers to their rooms, helped them register and showed them and their parents around the grounds. There was no down time for anyone as the whirlwind of camp activity took over the day and kept the adrenalin pumping from early in the morning until after the campers were all snug in their beds.

Dinner was a much more structured meal with most of the councilors back from the airports and almost all of the campers, although we did get a large shipment of kids from Munich just as dinner was being served, so it was hard to get everything in order.

After dinner the rules were read out in English and then translated into German, French, and Spanish by the German teacher Stephanie and then into Russian by some volunteer older campers. The translations were done so that all of the children could understand the rules which include: No drinking, no smoking, and no knives, stay on the floor assigned to your sex, follow the night time rules and listen to your counselors.

After dinner the campers were all divided into groups and given personal tours by their group leaders. They were shown the important meeting points, the different areas where sports would be and of course, the Star Trek room. When the campers were told to go to bed, the biggest question was whether or not they would be able to watch the Spain v. Italy game. Since it was the final of Euro 2012, they were given permission for this one night. The Spanish and Italian campers would have been very disappointed had they not been allowed to cheer on their teams. The Spanish campers unfortunately went to bed a little happier than the Italian campers.

We had a fantastic first day with no mishaps, except for one lost bag at the airport which will arrive tomorrow. The councilors are all pumped and ready to help the campers through the next amazing thirteen days of camp. Tomorrow will be a long fun day where many sports and activities will be taken part in by all of the campers. The oldest adventure campers will be biking to the lake while the younger campers will go rock climbing. The German and English campers and the film camp will get started on their programs and the counselors will have a strong start helping the campers enjoy their first full day of camp!
