Summer Camp Zell am See, Austria
First Full Day!
And so, the first full day of camp has come! The final four campers arrived this evening completing our camp, and getting us set to manage 65 campers for the next week.
The day started off with all of the councilors working as a team, to help all of the campers make it to their morning meetings. Being the first day with meetings could mean that some campers had forgotten and others were lost by the winding passage ways of the underground area of the two buildings of the hotel. At the meetings the campers found out how the day would work and where they would spend the rest of the day.
A breakfast of yogurt, cold cuts, fresh fruit and vegetables got the campers on a good start before they headed off to their activities. The German and English campers made it to their first classes where they were met by their enthusiastic teachers that hit the ground running with lesson plans designed to help them learn more vocabulary which included art and scavenger hunts.
The film student listened to a lecture by their counselors about an introduction to screen writing and the theory about making a film. They will begin to work on the plots for their movies in a few days.
The adventure campers were all over the place. The blues rode their bikes to the lake where they had the option of swimming in the lake before returning to the hotel. The reds and yellows traded turns on the Rockwall where some of the kids took to the wall like geckos. Others found it a little more complicated, but their goal is to make it higher next time.
We had a delicious chicken curry for lunch with salad followed by ice cream for dessert.
After lunch the campers scattered all over camp taking part in many different activities including Zumba, arts and crafts, ultimate-frisbee, tennis, basketball, volleyball, swimming pool and low ropes. The groups of campers were given a choice of activities depending on their color group and they chose two each.
For dinner we had grilled cheese sandwiches with broccoli soup and a salad bar. At the end of the dinner we had a very special event including cake and candles; Andre Yunis turned sixteen today and had ???happy birthday??? sung to him by the whole camp. After he had had a small piece of cake he happily shared it with his table and gave the rest to the youngest campers at a different table who gleefully accepted the gift.
The day finished with the color groups splitting up to build strong bonds in team making activities. The yellows went with their leaders and the blues and reds teamed up and hiked down to the soccer field to play different games such as chuck the chicken, vortex and zombie dodge ball. The teams learned to work together and had a great time doing it.
After the team building events were over the campers were sent to bed and reminded of their wake up time and meeting time the next morning.
