Summer Camp Leysin, Switzerland

3rd July 2024

Mid-Week Madness!

Campers are getting into the swing of things as they get more familiar with camp and their new friends. Today has been an action-packed day for campers from every group!

However, before the adventures started, some campers went to their respective classes to broaden their horizons. In the morning the English class, led by our amazing teacher Shay, focused on conversational practice today and project-based activities! The campers watched English language documentaries on the countries that they were interested in visiting and then wrote a travel brochure for said country!

Similarly, the French class, led by the lovely Aurelia and Melissa, also discussed travel today! The more advanced speakers used long sentences and wrote a review for a fictional hotel in the location of their choice! Speakers newer to French looked at emotions and practised using “Être et avoir”.

The Lab Explorers had another engaging and educational morning! They started out by continuing to look at engineering. They built marble roller coasters to learn about gravitational potential and kinetic energy, and model bridges to learn about tension. Their teacher Chris, as well as our wonderful nurses Egle and Irene, discussed sports and science and then went on to lead an exciting experiment where they looked at the rise and fall of temperature in heat and ice packs as well as surface tension!

Our Greenies went on the much loved Ice Cream and Cheese hike today where they got to wander through the serene Swiss Alps and try local Swiss cheese! Afterwards, they tried their hand at ice skating and field sports!

It was the yellow's turn today to scale our beautiful quarry. Under the supervision of our experts, they made it to the top of some of our challenging paths with bravery and smiles! Yellows also spent the day doing a scavenger hunt, and playing a variety of sports in the gym, basketball, art and archery! They ended the day with the Greenies playing the insanely fun “Petting Zoo” where they have to capture animals *cough* counsellors *cough*.

With many reds on the drop-dead-gorgeous mountain hut hike, the remaining campers either got their adrenaline pumping with mountain biking or had a more relaxed session of mini golf and swimming. They ended the day with a cosy campfire on the Village Camp terrace due to the weather. The bleak rain didn’t dampen our camper's spirits as they ate delicious smores, shared laughs and played cards together!

The Blues had a very sporty day, braving the mountain bike paths, playing a game of beach volleyball and even the hilarious “frolf” (aka frisbee golf)! They then joined up with the LTC campers and had a great evening of ice skating!

It is so wonderful to see the campers embrace camp life and build meaningful friendships. We’ve had so much fun already but the adventures are just getting started!

LTC:

To warm up for the morning activities ahead, campers played a game of ‘Guess the song’ Campers correctly named most of the tunes from across the decades. During the morning session the campers were involved in an multi activity event, this is named odd ball Olympics. This consists of games such as obstacle course, paper airplane flight, music name quiz and other activities.

After a short break they went on to be shown some basic techniques in self-defence by David, who trains individuals in the police South Africa and internationally.

In the afternoon the group went away to take part in rafting on a local river, they were split into two groups on the boats, they were also accompanied by a counsellor on each raft. Whilst on the river, they stopped and were permitted to float down the river, they did this individually and then as a group.

After coming back and having their evening meal, they went and got changed, they then went down to the local ice rink to take part in ice skating, they were taking part in this with the blues. They used the various balancing tools to move around the rink. They got involved with some of the blues and enjoyed spending time with them for the second time this week.

A very happy birthday to our camper Alexis! Thank you for choosing to spend your day with us at Village Camps!
