Summer Camp Zell am See, Austria

3rd July 2012

Day of Fun and Survival Skills!

Today the older campers who are part of the adventure camp learned how to build a fire and a shelter in case of an emergency. They were led by the councilors who instructed them on the process and then watched them replicate the process to ensure that they knew how to do it properly. The shelters were tested against replicated wind, (the tarps being shaken,) and rain. The younger adventure campers went to the lake in Zell am See to learn how to kayak and play water games.

The English class learned the verb 'to be.' They practiced how to use it in sentences by playing games.

For lunch the campers had Clear soup, fired pearls, Wiener Schnitzel (Turkey) Potatoes, Salad-bar, and a fruit salad before heading off to their next activities.

After lunch we had our first secret friend reading where the campers could take part. The secret friend box is a decorated box where friends can autonomously leave messages for their friends that promote some great things that they have learned about their friends. These are then read out load to the entire camp ever afternoon.

After the afternoon meeting the campers split up to take part in many activities. Today the options included yoga, basketball, movie making, soccer, swimming, climbing, and volleyball. The counselors Lorna and Paige had great success getting the red girls and one boy to take part in a very long yoga session where they campers exceeded expectations with their stretching abilities and looked as if they were having a great time. The yellow campers tried out their skills on the volleyball court where they learned the three elements of volleyball and were able to successfully pass the balls back and forth. Camper Maxim had the best bump pass.

During the second half of the afternoon some rain set in so the soccer was canceled and the yellow group who was down on the field came back early and took part in the second yoga class.

It was still raining when free time came, but this did not deter the campers from checking out some money from the bank and heading down the street to get some ice cream and goodies right before dinner.

Dinner was pasta and the campers loved it! That food went so fast and the leftovers were quickly consumed by those who were not full yet.

After dinner it was GAME NIGHT!!!!!! What an adventure that was! Each color group was split up into different games. The yellows played scatagories, the reds played cranium and the blues played family feud. There was some concern that the yellows would not get the game, but they took to it like fish to water and loved every minute of the night. The reds were such a big group that the noise level was hard to control, but they still had a great time. Finally the blues, being the smallest groups split into the Griffen family and Sange Latina. The Griffen family won by a large margin before they were the finally group to be sent to bed.

Big day tomorrow! We are going to the Krimmel Waterfall in the afternoon!
